Today, GOOS is subcritical and facing a number of increasing risks which include funding, technology, human capacity, data interoperability, geopolitical instability, and coordination and governance. Considering these challenges, the G7 FSOI working group has re-affirmed the need for coordinated action to strengthen and evolve GOOS for the benefit of society. This workshop represents a key milestone in that effort - it will provide a comprehensive overview of the current status of GOOS, associated risks, and future development plans, while highlighting the contributions of G7 members, which collectively support a significant proportion of the global system.
The objectives of this workshop are to:
- Assess the current risk landscape affecting GOOS,
- Identify concrete actions that G7 members and partners can undertake to mitigate these risks; and
- Provide strategic guidance to GOOS on priorities and information needs to support future investments and coordination.
In preparation for this workshop, a meeting of G7 FSOI OneArgo experts and the Argo Steering Team was convened in May to assess the current status and future plans of G7 members’ contributions to OneArgo.
