G7 French Presidency to host a high-level GOOS workshop

As part of the G7 French Presidency of the G7 FSOI, together with the French Ocean Observing System (Fr-OOS), there will be an invitation-only high-level international workshop on the resilience and evolution of the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS). This event has been officially labeled a G7 France event and will support the Governance, Coordination, and Sustained Funding priority topic of the G7 FSOI, which aims to strengthen the overall governance of GOOS through increased and formalized interactions between the global governance mechanism of GOOS and the national coordination structures that fund and implement the observing system.

The meeting will be held in-person in Paris, France from September 17-18, after the Fr-OOS General Assembly.

Today, GOOS is subcritical and facing a number of increasing risks which include funding, technology, human capacity, data interoperability, geopolitical instability, and coordination and governance. Considering these challenges, the G7 FSOI working group has re-affirmed the need for coordinated action to strengthen and evolve GOOS for the benefit of society. This workshop represents a key milestone in that effort - it will provide a comprehensive overview of the current status of GOOS, associated risks, and future development plans, while highlighting the contributions of G7 members, which collectively support a significant proportion of the global system.

The objectives of this workshop are to:

  • Assess the current risk landscape affecting GOOS,
  • Identify concrete actions that G7 members and partners can undertake to mitigate these risks; and
  • Provide strategic guidance to GOOS on priorities and information needs to support future investments and coordination.

In preparation for this workshop, a meeting of G7 FSOI OneArgo experts and the Argo Steering Team was convened in May to assess the current status and future plans of G7 members’ contributions to OneArgo.
